Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

I upgraded my Dell XPS 1530 from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. As usual when upgrading a Debian-based system, the process itself was a breeze: click "upgrade" in Update Manager, answer a few questions (mainly about what to do with manually modified config files - I usually choose to replace them, and then check my modifications in the backup that dpkg creates), and half an hour later the updates are downloaded and installed.

I'm generally happy with the latest stable Ubuntu version, though the differences to 8.04 are mostly under the hood, so not very noticeable with my daily work. Some issues I had with Hardy Heron are fixed now (e.g. the problems with the Synaptics touchpad), but there are some new problems which I didn't have before and haven't found a fix yet:

  • After booting or wake from suspend, he built-in camera is always on. This can be fixed by starting (and closing) any application that accesses the camera.
  • In at least 50% of the cases, Firefox crashes when suspending the laptop. This is particularily annoying since I often keep tabs open for later offline reading, in which case not even the session manager will be a relieve...
  • After wake from suspend, it takes quite a long time before Network Manager reconnects to my wireless network. A workaround is to manually reconnect.
So overall, I'm slowely getting closer to a system where Things Just Work. I still miss my Macbook Pro and OS X...
