Just finished adapting the picture gallery for the new site layout. Apart from fitting in nicely now, it also contains new pictures from our Skitourenwoche in the Silvretta Alps.
Gimme speed!

It was about time to replace the hardware of the server this site runs on (it used to be a Pentium I 166 with 48 MB RAM, having a hard time to deal with the requests), so an upgrade to my desktop which freed some resources just came in handy. Apart from a shiny new bright-green case, upgrades include an AMD Athlon 600, an ASUS K7M MoBo and 256 MB RAM. The upgrade went fairly smooth (apart from a glitch with the graphics card, where the BIOS was set to look for an AGP card, but the one I had was PCI), and the speed increase is considerable.
My first paper

Two more papers will be published in Genome Research later this year. For details, see the publications section I added to this site.
Relaunch, stage 1

Design and implementation went quite smoothly, so here it is, the all-new layout. I will do a staged launch, where this first stage is mainly a port of my old homepage's content. The next stage will include an adapted version of the picture gallery and a nicer download facility. So watch out!
A new year's plan

Now that Luca has arrived, we have settled in at home a little bit and Luca's website is in a stable state of development, I can tackle an old issue: Revamping my own homepage. It has been sitting around for 4 years now (the last redesign dates back to my job applications in 2000), and it's time for a change. So let's go for the screendesign then ...
